Panasonic GH1 - JAPAN MODEL - Test

April 29th, 2009

Directors of Photography Ryan E. Walters and Hunter Richards were at Lyon Films this week to put the Panasonic GH1 - Japanese Model - through the paces. The camera is a DSLR with a video function at 1080 24p and 720 60p and 30p. The camera is currently only available in Japan, so that is what we used. The cinema and video blogs have been a buzz with footage from the camera. We will post an update as soon as Ryan and/or Hunter have finished their report. My personal feeling was one of mild interest, which just got “milder” as we went along. The problems using a DSLR for video, even if the low light is great and the DOF is stellar, just seem to far outweigh the negatives. There is no question that in the right hands great quality can come from these amazing pieces of technology but they are simply no way ready for prime time day-to-day production.

The Keizer Times Newspaper: Locally made film to debut at Salem festival

April 11th, 2009

Published: April 10, 2009

By JASON COX

Of the Keizertimes

A film with strong Keizer ties is premiering at the Salem Film Festival next weekend.

“A/S/L: Age Sex Location” is set to premiere at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Salem Cinema as part of the festival.

The film was produced by Keizerite Don Jensen’s Dirt Poor Films and used an all-Oregon production team: From the director and actors to the production staff, all live in the Beaver State. The director is Devon Lyon, and the original script is by Tony Pierce.

The title is derived from a common Internet chat inquiry, and the story revolves around three stories, all involving the Internet.

It’s not so much condemning the Internet as it is recognizing “a sea change in the way that people communicate with each other,” said Lyon.

The screenplay tells the stories for a woman who has an online affair, a girl whose Web surfing puts her in the crosshairs of a child predators, and a teenage boy who develops a habit of viewing pornography online.

“It’s a darker film, but it has a hopeful message – with this technological advance comes problems, but it also comes with a lot of promise,” Lyon said. “Part of it is coming up with new societal guidelines.

“You can go online and be whoever you want to be,” Lyon added. “You can create your reality and there’s no accountability, whereas real human interactions and relationships take work and are challenging.”

The challenging part, however, is what makes real-life interaction “great. The Internet removes the hard part, so it lures people in … The movie loops back around and says that what really matters are the real, actual relationships in your life.”

The movie is Lyon’s first feature-length film and is the first by Dirt Poor Films. Jensen said the company is in talks with Hollywood Video for possible DVD distribution. Jensen is also considering finding a way to get the film to teachers for use in classes and is seeking television distribution.

Shot entirely in the Salem-Keizer area, if you’re observant you may notice numerous local landmarks: Wallace Marine Park, the downtown Salem skate park at Marion Square, North Salem High School and three homes on a Keizer street.

The response from parents has been “phenomenal,” Jensen said.

“One mother told me every parent should see this film, just because … the Internet is an open door for us to talk to people,” Jensen said.

He described the message of the film as follows:

“The Internet is a fantastic, modern tool to use,” Jensen said. “But it also won’t ever replace that one-on-one accountability relationship that we’re kind of starving to have. I think people sometimes maybe become some of their real self on the Internet – some of their own fears and desires get displayed on the Internet … and sometimes it can be the false you too. Whereas in a real face-to-face relationship you can see someone’s body language and what they’re really saying.”

“We have to get in front of people and have relationships. People should have best friends who they can actually go sit and have a cup of coffee with,” he added.

Panasonic HPX 300 Test Shots

April 5th, 2009

The following embedded Vimeo videos are from the Panasonic HPX 300. No color grade or effects were applied. Shot on Sunday, April 5th in Portland, Oregon. Rather windy day so a few of the pans are not the smoothest (best to blame it on the weather not the operator, yours truly).

If you choose to watch the video in HD on the Vimeo site and you go full screen, turn scaling OFF. I’ve found that keeping scaling on tanks playback by making it incredibly choppy.  Also, always let the entire video load before beginning playback.

Quite a few of the shots are at the mid to long range on the stock Fujinon lens. It has been well established that the camera has wobble from the 3MOS chips. So, my goal was not to whip pan the camera around just to prove what we all already know. Instead, the goal was to provide an assortment of shots to help people evaluate the images.

As the North American Panasonic product manager has stated, they are aware of the significant skew at 1080 24PN and the higher noise levels. We all hope the next firmware update addresses both. The camera is, without question, noisiest and exhibits the most pronounced skew in 1080 24PN. I have found the other 1080 settings, especially 60i, to be the cleanest noise-wise. And, the 720 settings, especially VFR 60 over 24PN to be very pretty when using AVC-Intra 100 (examples included in one of the videos below).
